From Sandwich Stand to Food Solutions Leader

Our story began when Stewart Ritchie, a second-year medical student at Stanford University, got some bad news from his family: finance your own studies or return to Kansas.

An innovator by nature

Stew chose to remain at Stanford. He saw an opportunity for quality food solutions on campus. What if there was a way to affordably feed himself and his fellow students? And what if that food was also nutritious and great tasting?

Setting the foundation

Stew built a sandwich stand using a medical lab cart and sourced ingredients from a nearby family-run deli. It quickly became a staple for study groups and student gatherings. As demand grew, Stew’s future wife and fellow medical student, Jeanie, provided support. A collaboration with a German baker resulted in the birth of the brand we now know as Guckenheimer, or “looking at home.”

Over the next 60 years, Guckenheimer would evolve into a corporate dining leader, providing food solutions and catering experiences from individual kiosks to lively restaurants. Guckenheimer now provides culinary services and partners with industry pioneers in technology, life sciences, production and more across hundreds of locations.
